Bloom for the Planet

Jaelyn Doyle

In a world where sustainability is becoming more crucial than ever, we spoke with Amanda Temple, Owner and Designer at Indigo Song, to discuss how her business is making a difference. Here's a glimpse into our enlightening conversation.

The Inspiration Behind Indigo Song's Sustainable Practices

Amanda’s commitment to sustainability is rooted in her experience living in Bermuda. "Living on a small island surrounded by the ocean, we've seen firsthand the effects of pollution and global warming," Amanda shared. "In the last decade, there has been a noticeable increase in plastic debris washing up on our shores. Fish, birds, and turtles are dying from bellies full of garbage."

Amanda and her team have been eco-warriors for over 20 years. "We hang our laundry in the sun, compost, keep chickens, have tiny home gardens, and keep reusable bags on hand for all purchases. When we started Indigo Song in 2017, we knew that we wanted to create a brand that was taking every possible step to protect the environment." The goal was clear: create beautiful, wearable memories of Bermuda while protecting the environment and ensuring fair treatment for workers.

Future Trends and Challenges in Sustainability

Amanda acknowledges that the path to sustainability is challenging, especially in the fashion industry. "There are very few sustainable fabric options, and we spend countless hours hunting for eco-friendly fabrics," she said. However, she remains hopeful that as more companies adopt sustainable practices, these options will become more accessible and affordable.

Advice for Adopting Sustainable Practices

For health and wellness brands looking to embrace sustainability, Amanda offers practical advice from her own experience. “We initially wanted beautiful hang tags to tell our story, but realized they were wasteful. Instead, we use reusable price tags,” Amanda explained. Additionally, Indigo Song minimizes plastic use by packaging multiple items together and uses natural fabrics with non-toxic, plant-based inks for digital printing.
